Bighorn River, Wyoming Fly Fishing: Stoke

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Tim H. stoke

Fishing Report:

Weather is mild and fishing remains excellent. Fish are holding in the slower deeper water.

NYMPHS: have produced best with your standard tailwater bugs producing. Scuds, midges, eggs, crayfish, did I mention midges….

STREAMERS: slow retrieves have been producing well. If your into the two-hander game…. swinging em up has been producing if your patient…. small and olive….hint hint.

DRY FLY: midge clusters for the risers. we love the buzzball tied in darker colors for this kind of fishing. The old standard Griffith Gnat is deadly as well.

jetboat trips for the spring

Saturday, December 15th, 2012

Capt. Charles is wrapping up his 30 day fishing and surfing adventure in Panama. The 2012 season was amazing in both Montana and Wyoming. The Bighorn River produced some great fish and amazing days for our anglers. We are looking forward to the upcoming 2013 season with great anticipation. Spring is right around the corner for us here in Thermopolis, Wyoming. We usually get cranking around the last week of feb or beginning of March if the weather permits. This early fishing is some of the best we have. Steve Beaz is ready and pumped for another season as well. Remember we offer Jetboat trips in both Montana and Wyoming which is truly a fun and enjoyable way to fish our fisheries. Let us know about your 2013 trip!

Thermopolis Fly Fishing Report

A beautiful Rainbow from the Yellowstone River

Sorry for the lack of updates. We have been on the river every day. Capt C. has been guiding in Montana and will be returning to guide for the month of September and October. Steve Beaz has been out on the Bighorn River and recently just put up a 23″ rainbow on top! The MOSS is dying off and fishing has remained consistent. Terrestrials are the name of the game for those that enjoy  the dry fly. Bobbers are working but……..thats another story. Streamers have been taking some big fish throughout the entire river system.

The Statepark stretch below Boysen has been fishing well and is always an option. Standard Tailwater fair. UV Czech, Blooms Weight Fly, Tailwater Tiny. Midge. Scud. Some are running the short leash in the afternoon and doing well. You do not need a ton of weight. Get after it. The river is fishing all the way from the dam to below town. Give us a call if you want in. 307.438.0740

Bighorn River in Thermopolis, Wyoming Fishing Report

Another Bighorn River Brown Trout falls to the purple chubby!

We are getting lots of complaints about moss on the river. We agree it is a pain. You will have to clean your fly every drift even when fishing big dries. Nymphing is out of the question, as is streamer fishing. The Trico hatch remains consistent and fish are keyed in on them! If you are willing to deal with the moss and floating salad it can be rewarding.  When fishing blind fishing terrestrials change up your pattern until you get on that works. The bigger and bulkier the better at least for us. Give us a call! 307.438.0740.

Tom H. with one of many on top!

We have been all over the place guiding. The Bighorn River in Thermopolis remains fishable but the floating moss is becoming a serious problem for all anglers. Be prepared to clean your hooks every cast.  Capt. C spent three days guiding Tom H. and his son Colin last week and fishing was steady. Tricos in the am and terrestrials for the remainder of the day. Come out and enjoy!

wedding of the waters double

Larry M. with one of many

We have been busy out on the river this past week. Steve Beaz and Capt C. spent the week guiding on the Wedding of the Waters. Midweek fishing has been the best with far fewer boats on the river. Wednesday we were the only boats on the river. Saturday was a boat show but the fishing was outstanding. We have been chasing the bobber until the fish are up eating baetis or baetis emergers. Dry fly fishing has been great even without cloud cover. However it is far better with cloud cover. Get out after it and you will be rewarded. Give us a call at 307.438.0740 for your spring fishing adventure.
