giving back….

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Yesterday evening we joined the local angling club, Popo Agie Anglers to clean up about a mile or so of Sinks Canyon Road. We picked up quite a bit of garbage and found some odd items. It was for a great cause and I am glad we joined. Be sure to join us at the 20th Annual Popo Agie Angler Fundraiser on June 5th. It is sure to be a good time. 307 outfitters is donating a jet-boat trip to the silent auction so be sure to come out and enjoy the fun. The fishing has been consistent and the flows are looking perfect so far this season. I will be going up to Montana for the week to film and do a photo shoot with the owner of Kingpin Centerpins and another member of the pro-staff. I cannot wait and we will be testing out the new IMPERIALS which are Kinpins new line of centerpin reels. They are designed with the inland pin fisherman in mind. Enjoy the weekend and be sure to get out and fish!

fishing has been steady

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Even with the raise in the flows. fished yesterday and did well. all sight fishing except for 2 fish. most of the fish i saw i caught with the pin. fish did not want to cooperate for photos and without a net I gave up after awhile. got one nice cutt that took the fly away from a big brown that i was fishing to. nice fish regardless…. back out tomorrow. ¬†majority of the fish came on bwo nymphs.

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

the nymph bite is back on. or should I say i had to start nymphing yesterday. long leash in the am (5 to 12 ft). then short leash in the afternoon (1 to 3 ft). we caught fish on leeches. scuds. baetis. and more baetis. this weekend is shaping up to be a warm one with highs in the 70s and little cloud cover. get your bobbers out and go get em.

fly fishing is a blood sport

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

i haven’t had a fish turn over on me and not swim off in a long time. I cannot remember the last time a fish hasn’t swum off. I will kill hatchery steelhead without a problem but it is hard to watch a nice brown not make it. this hen took my streamer DEEP and took the back hook deep in her gills… needless to say it made me realize what i have always known, that fly fishing is a blood sport whether you want it to be or not. regardless this fish was kept after trying to revive her for close to 20 minutes. she was taken home by JP and baked for mother’s day.

fishing update

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

first trip down the canyon with someone actually fishing. wow what a difference it makes. i met my buddy AB from jackon at the bighorn early sunday. fished until 1ish and decided to eat lunch and head up to the state park. I had been hyping up the canyon all day on the bighorn so we headed up for the afternoon. on the first drift down we rolled a nice bow, next cast 24 inch rainbow landed by AB. we were pumped and it was a great way to start the season. we continued to streamer fish down and rolled and caught fish the entire way down. we learned a lot yesterday. 1st de barbed client streamers will make you loose fish.  2nd after stinging 2 big bows in 2 casts you know its your turn to row. right AB? if this short afternoon is any indication of this upcoming season, then it should be a good one!
